There’s little chance of Thea Lee being bored during the school holidays. She’ll be far too busy perfecting her arabesques and pirouettes. The East Maitland 7-year-old has enrolled in the city’s Summer School of Dance and Creative Art. The brainchild of Maitland dance teachers Janos Szabo and Suzanne Pettit, the school is designed to inspire and enrich children and adults alike during the school holidays.

“This is the first time we have done something like this and the aim is to provide the people of Maitland with something creative to do during the school break,” Ms Pettit said. But while there’ll be many classes for children, there’ll also be something for adults. “There’ll be lessons for adults, including belly dancing, and there’ll also be art classes because we want people to realise dancing is about so much more than a series of jerky movements.”

The summer school will start on Monday at the Morpeth School of Arts and Morpeth Scout halls. Classes will be held between 8.30am and 5.30pm. Phone Suzanne Pettit on 4933 4752 for details.
